About Alex Morey

After my clerkship, I entered private practice with Silverman, Decaria & Kattelman, Chtd., where I trained under two of Nevada’s most respected family law attorneys, Gary Silverman and Mary Anne Decaria. Their high standards shaped my approach to the law and reinforced the importance of preparation, clarity, and precision. I still remember Gary’s exacting use of the Socratic method and Mary Anne’s ceaseless editing—to this day, I continue to associate a green fine-tip pen with the umpteenth draft of a brief.

I became a partner in the firm in 2016 and a board-certified specialist in family law in 2019. For more than 15 years, I have focused my practice on family law, representing clients from all walks of life—from individuals working hard to make ends meet to families with complex financial estates. My work has included cases involving child custody, alimony, termination of parental rights, domestic violence protection orders, business dissolutions, probate matters, and complex property issues.

I have appeared in district courts across Nevada, as well as the Nevada Court of Appeals and the Nevada Supreme Court, with most of my practice centered here in Washoe County. Those experiences have reinforced the importance of preparation, clear courtroom management, and timely rulings.

While many cases resolve through settlement, not all can or should. I have long supported alternative dispute resolution, and through careful preparation most of my cases have resolved without trial. When trial is necessary, I am prepared to present complex issues clearly and efficiently so that decisions can be made fairly and without unnecessary delay.

I first came to Northern Nevada for summer externships, first with the Nevada Department of Public Safety and then for Magistrate Judge Valerie Cooke. During my time with Judge Cooke, I saw firsthand the impact a thoughtful, prepared, and compassionate judiciary can have on people’s lives.

After law school, I accepted a law clerk position with the Honorable Deborah Schumacher in the Second Judicial District Court. That same summer, my wife—, a Northern Nevada native and graduate of Bishop Manogue High School—, and I moved to Reno.

My two years clerking for Judge Schumacher were formative. I learned that the most difficult part of judging is not simply resolving legal questions but ensuring that people leave the courtroom knowing they were heard and treated fairly.

In addition to my practice, I have worked to strengthen Nevada’s legal system by: 

• Serving on the committee that modernized the Washoe District Court Rules
• Being elected by my peers three times to the Family Law Executive Council of the State Bar of Nevada, where I currently serve as Secretary
• Serving as Chair of the Family Law Specialization Board
• Helping develop programs to improve complex family law case management
• Teaching continuing legal education 
• Volunteering with access-to-justice programs, working directly with people who must navigate the court system without a lawyer

These experiences have given me a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by both attorneys and self-represented litigants.

I do not take the responsibility of serving as a judge lightly. A judge must be firm but respectful, patient but decisive, and committed to treating everyone equally under the law. I strive to listen carefully, maintain composure under pressure, and ensure that every person who appears in court feels they were treated with fairness and respect.

Washoe County deserves a family court that works—one that is prepared, efficient, and guided by sound judgment. I am running for Department 13 because I believe my experience, training, and commitment to this community have prepared me to serve. If elected, I will work every day to ensure that every person who enters my courtroom knows they were heard, respected, and treated fairly.
